Rise Into Wellness Wednesdays | When "Healthy Enough" Isn't Enough

Updated: Oct 13

🌿 Wellness Wins: Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

Each week, in the quiet stillness before the day begins, I’m reminded that wellness isn’t something to chase — it’s something to awaken to.

Rise Into Wellness is where your healing meets your becoming.

Together, we walk through quiet transformations and bold intentions, blending soulful truths with practical steps that strengthen your body, renew your mind, and align your life.

Here, we celebrate Wellness Wins — small, steady shifts — because every mindful choice is an act of purpose, and every moment of healing brings you closer to who you’re meant to be.

Awareness is the doorway — and today, we open it.

When “Healthy Enough” Isn’t Enough

A Wake-Up Call on My Health Journey

A little over 20 years ago, I first heard the word pre-diabetes. Back then, Coca-Cola was part of my daily routine. I drank it most day most days at lunch—and sometimes even at dinner. Looking back, I didn’t realize how casual habits could quietly affect my health.

After a routine physical, my doctor told me my A1C was creeping up. I needed to make changes — or risk developing type 2 diabetes. I’d seen family members struggle with it, and I didn’t want that for myself.

So, I gave up soda, lost about 15 pounds, and my A1C returned to normal. For years, I thought I was doing “enough.” I ate fairly well, made sure to get some fruits and vegetables daily (though not at every meal), worked out sporadically when the “urge” hit, and assumed that was sufficient.

But a couple of years ago, after my annual checkup, my A1C came back at 5.7%. Pre-diabetes had returned — uninvited and unwelcome. That number hit me differently this time. I realized that “healthy enough” wasn’t enough. I needed to be intentional about the choices I was making — not just for the numbers on a lab report, but because I want to be around for the long run and fully enjoy life with the people I love. I want to be the kind of person who consistently shows up for my health, my energy, and my future — because that’s what living with intention and living on purpose truly means to me.

🩺 My Doctor’s advice was simple:

“Eat more fruits and vegetables, less refined grains, and get in at least 30 minutes of brisk walking, five days per week.”

On paper, that sounds easy enough. But here’s what I’ve learned: the difference isn’t just in doing these things — it’s in choosing them with intention. Intention turns habits into commitments and makes wellness less about checking boxes and more about living on purpose.

🌱 My First Steps: Intentional Wellness Wins

Here’s where I’m starting this time around — every day, each choice guided by intention:

🌙 Sleep (7–8 hours per night)

I set the intention to protect my rest, knowing it fuels my energy and focus. When I skimp on sleep, I feel sluggish, crave sugary foods, and my workouts suffer. Rest is more than downtime — it’s my body’s way of repairing, balancing hormones, and protecting me from type 2 diabetes.

💡 Pro Tip: Prioritize rest by building a gentle bedtime routine— consistency helps energy, focus, and hormone balance.

💧 Hydration (8 servings of water per day)

I set the intention to hydrate as an act of care. I start my mornings with a tall glass of water — even before coffee — and set small targets throughout the day. Staying hydrated sharpens my focus, curbs mindless snacking, and helps my body manage blood sugar more effectively. It’s a simple habit that makes a real difference.

💡 Pro Tip: Start your morning with a glass of warm lemon water to kickstart your digestive system and gently wake up your metabolism.

🌾 Choosing Whole Grains (and Sourdough)

Instead of just “eating better,” I set the intention to choose grains that truly sustain me. I’ve made a gradual swap with breads — moving from white to sourdough since wheat isn’t my preference. I also include oatmeal for breakfast and brown rice instead of refined grains.

These small, steady swaps are Wellness Wins in themselves — proof that progress doesn’t have to be drastic to make a difference. Over time, they keep me full longer, steady my blood sugar, and ground my energy throughout the day.

💡 Pro Tip: Sourdough is easier to digest, steadier for blood sugar, nutrient-rich, and tangy — making healthy swaps satisfying and sustainable.

🌈 Eating the Rainbow

I set the intention to fill my plate with colorful fruits and vegetables at every meal — spinach, broccoli, beets, berries, peppers. Each bite is a small step toward better health and keeps eating exciting.💡

Pro Tip: Fill half your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables — variety supports nutrients, gut health, and keeps meals enjoyable.

🏃🏾‍♀️ Movement that's Good for the Mind & Body

I move with intention — not to punish myself, but to celebrate what my body can do. I enjoy running, but I know my knees don’t handle back-to-back runs well. So I alternate running and walking days, giving my body time to recover while staying consistent with movement. I also mix in yoga, stretching, or dancing around the house. Movement becomes an act of gratitude for my health and a step toward protecting my future.

💡 Pro Tip: Alternate high-impact and low-impact days to protect joints, stay consistent, and keep movement enjoyable.

Progress, Not Perfection

None of this is about doing everything right. It’s about making small, steady, intentional shifts that add up over time. I don’t expect perfection — I expect progress.

When your wellness choices are intentional, you’re not just following a health checklist — you’re cultivating the energy, confidence, and future you want to live. 🌱

🌸 Awareness Is the Doorway- You don’t have to walk through it all at once — just open it.
